Oh Guadalajara how you delight my taste buds. Last week I was in Mexico for work and got to try some local treats.
One such delight was the torta ahogada, a drowned sandwich which is submerged in a sauce make of dried chili peppers and/or tomato-based. The sandwiches are made with birote bread, a bread typical of the area. Although the sandwich is submerged in the sauce, the bread keeps a crunch to it. The common version of the sandwich has pork, along with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. It is served with pickled treats as well as spicy peppers. I enjoyed mine with a strawberry horchata.
